This Was Meant to Be Your Song

Do my words not affect you?

Does my sadness not get to you?

If so, how the hell do you sleep at night?

You told me to forget you,

like that's somehow a closure.

Saying goodbye doesn't make it right.

The last time I saw you,

at a bar, after you'd had a few.

You cried saying "hold me tight."

With your lips pressed against me,

like a trip back in time.

For a moment I thought you were mine.

Oh my how I knew you'd forget.

Oh, is this it?

A playful game of remember when?

Oh, is this it?

A playful game with my broken heart?

That last text I sent you,

I know that it went through.

Your friends still do their part.

It's so sad to see,

a star left with no glow.

God, I remember being blinded from the start.

But where do I start now?

There are so many parts now.

I don't know where each time ends.

Oh, how I wonder how you could forget?

Oh, is this it?

A playful game of remember when?

Oh, is this it?

A playful game with my broken heart?

Do my words not affect you?

Does my sadness not get to you?

If not, why the hell are trying to hide?

We are so far from goodbye.

Oh, is this it?

A playful game of remember when?

Oh, is this it?

A playful game with my broken heart?

Sometimes we don’t understand why someone we love leaves us. So we hold onto hope, thinking “maybe I can fix this. Maybe I can save them.” That person may come back around, in my case, with dishonest intentions, and we end up hurting more. This song was about that time, pleading for some sort of understanding, an answer of any kind, just, something.

A lot of us will react this way and try so hard to find a reason for why it “ended” or “changed” whatever the situation may be. And most of the time it is for nothing else than to have a direction to point the blame or something to hate. Things happen for a reason though. As hard or painful as it may be, there was a reason, even if you never find it. Life doesn’t come with a heads-up display, but it came with simple instructions, follow the Lord.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5

If you are searching for the meaning of an ending, stop. As cliche as this sounds, every ending is a new beginning. Put forth your faith and stand tall. Pain will fade, and with the Lord’s help, it will heal.
